Mimbres pottery

The Deming Armory is a historic armory located on 301 South Silver Avenue in Deming, Luna County, New Mexico. It was built in 1915-16 for the United States Department of Army and is now used as a local museum. It is home to a large collection of Mimbres pottery and other Native American artifacts.

The Mimbres people were an agrarian pueblo culture that thrived in the Mimbres Valley between 550 and 1100 A.D. During this time, potters produced pottery with distinctive geometric designs and naturalistic designs. Many of these pots can be found at local museums, including the Deming Museum of History. The museum displays Mimbres pottery, including hand-molded pots, along with Native American baskets.

Mimbres pottery was traded extensively in the earlier days. Other archeological sites in the area have Mimbres pottery. This pottery may have been a prized possession of the elite, or an item of high status that was used for feasting or public events.

After Fewkes’ initial trip to the Mimbres Valley, many archeologists began to take an interest in the region. This interest led to widespread excavations in the area. Many of these findings led to numerous discoveries. Fewkes’ publications also brought attention to the region. His research on Mimbres pottery continues today.

The Mimbres were an ancient people who inhabited the region from approximately 1000 A.D. Their pottery is renowned for its geometric patterns and intricate imagery on their interiors. In addition to attracting counterfeiters and art collectors, Mimbres pottery has been the source of inspiration for a clay art festival, burglary in the Anthropology department of the University of Minnesota, and railroad dinnerware.

The Mimbres pottery is protected by the Archaeological Resources Protection Act. This legislation prohibits looting of archaeological resources that are more than 100 years old. As a result, the Mimbres pottery found in Deming has been protected for the next several years.

Unlike many other types of pottery, Mimbres pottery has no maker’s mark. Although it is difficult to determine who created these pieces, some researchers believe that the pottery makers were women who were trained by relatives.
